Innovative vegetarian restaurant Bonvivant Bistro, located in Berlin's Schöneberg area, has turned its acclaimed menu fully plant-based - making it the sixth vegan restaurant in the world to hold a Michelin star. The popular eatery has gained acclaim from critics and diners alike, making it a much-loved dinner and brunch hotspot in Berlin.

In January, the restaurant announced on its Instagram page that after making their sophisticated and colourful dinner menu vegan last year, their brunch was now also fully animal-free, making the entire offering vegan.

“It allows us to unleash even more culinary creativity and operate even more sustainably—without compromising on taste,” the post said. “We want to prove that vegan dining is not about sacrifice, but a forward-looking form of culinary culture.”

Faux meats may not be on the menu, leaving space instead to more authentic creations crafted with vegetables and legumes.

The restaurant's forward-thinking chef, Nikodemus Berger, was "never interested in creating cuisine that imitates animal products, but rather in creating independent innovations that delight our guests with their taste, texture and presentation.”

As for the motivation behind going fully vegan, Chef Berger also told Restaurant Ranking: "For us, the vegan approach is a decision in favour of the best taste, the highest creativity and climate friendliness."

Climate concerns are among the main reasons why restaurants elect to remove animal-derived foods off their menus. Research has shown numerous times that a plant-forward diet has a significantly lower impact on the environment – a 2023 Oxford University study found that vegan eating comes with 75 percet lower greenhouse-gas emissions, water pollution, and land use than a meatier diet. Eating vegan also reduces water use by 54 percent and has a 66 percet lower impact on wildlife

Choosing to dine vegan also helps spare animals such as cows, chickens, sheep and others from a life of misery on factory farms – subjected to painful mutilations and the risk of disease – and a terrifying death at the abattoir.

Dairy, which is the last trace of animal foods to be given up by Bonvivant, also separates families: calves are typically taken from their mothers a few hours or days after birth, so that the milk meant for them can be sold to humans. This causes immense trauma and suffering to both the mother and the baby. Mother cows are routinely forcefully impregnated to keep birthing new calves and producing milk. When their bodies are no longer considered useful, they are sent to slaughter.

Bonvivant Bistro joins a growing list of Michelin-starred vegan restaurants around the world, including Seven Swans in Frankfurt, Légume in Seoul, and De Nieuwe Winkel in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

London boasts three fine-dining establishments – Pied a Terre, Plates, and Gauthier Soho – that are fully plant-based and carry a Michelin star. New York's Eleven Madison Park was originally also on the list, but added animal products to its menu in 2025.
