The actress Anya Taylor-Jay, famous for her lead role in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, has spoken on the health and environmental benefits of going vegan.

Taylor-Jay plays a young chess prodigy in the hit show, which broke global streaming records on Netflix when 62 million households watched the series within just 28 days after its release in October this year.

Now with the 24-year old actress a sudden household name, Taylor-Jay has used her new platform to speak about her enjoyment of eating more plant-based foods.

"I’ve been a vegetarian since I was eight, so I don’t touch meat or fish”, the actress explained in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

She also revealed that she tries to be vegan whenever she can be, calling veganism “the most ecologically conscious choice you can make as a consumer”.

And so far, a vegan diet has made her feel “the healthiest I’ve ever felt”, with “so much energy”, which she puts down to eating so many greens.

And Taylor-Jay asserted the importance of being a conscious consumer, saying:

"I think it’s important in a commercial world to be as environmentally conscious as you possibly can be, because at the end of the day the earth is the only thing we have. So if we’re not taking care of our home, you’re not going to have a home anymore.”

Earlier this year, world-famous conservationist David Attenborough urged the public to cut down on their meat intake and instead eat more plant-based foods to help protect wildlife and the environment. “We must change our diet. The planet can’t support billions of meat-eaters”, explained Attenborough.
