Louis Vuitton prides itself on being a historic brand once known for elegance, but today they are stuck in the past, clinging to cruelty instead of embracing the innovative materials that define modern sophistication. Unlike the majority of high-end brands, Louis Vuitton continues to pay for helpless animals to be tortured and killed for their fur in order to create clothing that is gaudy, not glamorous.
By still using real fur in their newest collections, Louis Vuitton looks tacky and out of touch. While brands like Gucci, Chanel, Burberry, Prada, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana have all already gone fur-free or committed to phasing it out, Louis Vuitton keeps using animal body parts to produce pieces that are tired, not timeless.
Louis Vuitton is currently selling, among other fur items, a white mink jacket that has been partially spray-painted — a fashion statement that is the epitome of vulgar, not vogue.
Each year, up to 100 million animals are killed for their fur so that tone-deaf brands like Louis Vuitton can profit from their suffering. Undercover investigations of fur farms reveal horrific scenes: animals crammed into tiny wire cages, living in filth, suffering from open wounds and disease, and ultimately killed in unthinkably cruel ways — suffocation, electrocution, poisoning, or gas chambers — because these methods are cheap and preserve the pelts.
Louis Vuitton fuels this suffering just to design items that make the wearer look cheap, not chic. The company is also a holdout on other cruel materials, including exotic skins, despite mounting global pressure to abandon them. Louis Vuitton’s stubborn refusal to keep propping up these abusive industries is creepy and pathetic, and every season they cling to cruelty only cements their image as trashy, not trendy. By continuing to put profit before compassion Louis Vuitton is condemning countless animals to miserable lives and violent deaths. The time to demand accountability is now.
