The range of plant-based food continues to soar in the U.S. as supermarkets and chain restaurants expand their offerings to meet the rising consumer demand. From Mcdonalds’ upcoming McPlant range to Carl’s Jr.’s vegan burger, exciting, animal-free products are popping up everywhere. But, despite the huge surge in demand, Subway is yet to roll out a plant-based meat alternative sandwich nationwide.

So, we’re asking, what’s the hold-up?

The world’s current food system, which relies on industrial animal farming, is having a devastating effect on our land resources, water usage, and amount of carbon emissions, as well as causing immeasurable suffering to billions of farmed animals every year.

The United States is one of the countries with the highest meat consumption, but restaurants and food chains can play a huge part in reducing the demand for meat by choosing to offer a range of delicious, vegan alternatives.

Subway has been launching exciting new vegan products across other countries; in January 2020, the Meatless Meatball Marinara (which comes complete with vegan cheese) was added to its menus across the United Kingdom. And the franchise introduced the “Sub Veg,” - a new sandwich featuring soy-based protein and creamy, dairy-free cheddar cheese to its chains across Brazil last year, too.

Currently, U.S. Subway locations offer only one fully vegan pre-made sandwich called the Veggie Delite, which consists of lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and red onions on 9-grain wheat bread. Tasty, but we know Subway can do better.

Subway trialed a plant-based meatball sandwich at more than 600 locations in the U.S. and Canada in September 2019. The sandwich included Beyond Meat’s meatless meatballs, marinara sauce, and grated parmesan cheese (customers could omit the cheese to make it fully vegan) on a toasted six-inch sub. The sandwich is now available nationwide in Canada, but so far, there has been no news of the menu item being rolled out across stores in the U.S.

As one of the world’s most iconic franchises, Subway actively embracing plant-based food in the U.S. could be a HUGE win for animals and the planet. And that’s where we need your help.
