Not a Defeat — Just a Detour: Key Legal Battles Against Monkey Facility Press On

The ongoing legal fight to stop the largest monkey breeding facility in the United States from being built in Bainbridge, Georgia has entered a new phase. The Georgia State Supreme Court recently declined to hear an appeal challenging the revenue bond issued for Safer Human Medicine. While this decision is disappointing, it was not unexpected. The case involved a complicated procedural issue — essentially, whether the district attorney could legally appeal the bond approval he had initially supported himself.

Importantly, the court's decision does not amount to an endorsement of Safer Human Medicine, nor does it give the project a green light to proceed. Multiple significant legal challenges to the facility are still ongoing. These include a lawsuit alleging that the facility was approved in violation of Georgia’s Open Meetings Act and another public nuisance case. Both of these challenges are considered stronger than the revenue bond case and have the potential to stop the facility entirely.

Despite this, Safer Human Medicine is falsely claiming that the Supreme Court’s decision represents a major victory and clears the way for construction. This is simply not true. It’s another example of misinformation from a company determined to profit off the suffering of tens of thousands of monkeys. In reality, the facility is no closer to being built as a result of this procedural ruling.

We believe the film will raise national awareness and help generate the pressure needed to stop the facility.
