Breaking: Another Carriage Horse Dies in NYC Heat

Yesterday, another horse tragically lost her life to New York’s abusive carriage industry. Lady, a 15-year-old mare, collapsed in Hell’s Kitchen just days shy of the three-year anniversary of Ryder’s collapse—the senior horse whose fall and eventual death shocked the world and put a spotlight on this ongoing cruelty.

Witnesses reported that Lady collapsed and began shaking, and both her carriage and driver fell into the street. She died on the sweltering New York City pavement, and her body was unceremoniously dragged into a trailer. Lady had only been brought to New York two months ago. At 15 years old, she should have been spending her golden years grazing in peace, instead, she was literally worked to death.

This tragedy comes just two weeks after the carriage driver who was filmed beating Ryder as he lay helpless and collapsed from heat and exhaustion was acquitted, a direct result of New York’s weak horse protection laws.
The abuse and exploitation of these animals must stop, and it must stop now!

If you live in New York, please call your City Council members and tell them it’s time to bring Ryder’s Law, Intro 967, up for a vote and pass this vital bill to protect carriage horses from suffering and death on the city’s streets.

You can click here to go to the New York City Council District Page to find your council member. Just type your address into the search bar and your representative will appear. Click on their name to find both their district and legislative office phone numbers listed on the right-hand side of the page. Call, leave messages, speak out. You have the power to drive change in your city.

And if you haven’t already, please sign and share our petition in support of Ryder’s Law.
It is too late for Ryder and Lady—but we can ensure their deaths are not in vain.
