Every year, millions of animals are violently killed for one of the most gruesome aspects of the fashion industry: the exotic skin trade. The animals slaughtered for their skins include crocodiles, alligators, caimans, snakes, and lizards—species whose sentience is typically overlooked and undervalued, meaning there are often no regulations in place to protect them from suffering in captivity.

These helpless animals endure horrific living conditions, crowded into small, barren tanks and cages for months or even years before they are killed. Crocodiles can live for 60 years in the wild, yet in the name of old-fashioned fashion, these ancient, sentient beings are killed before they even reach the age of two. After short, miserable lives, they are subjected to torturous deaths—often having their throats cut and spinal cords severed—while many remain conscious as they are skinned alive, suffering unimaginable agony.

Over 20 major fashion brands, including giants like Nike and Adidas, as well as luxury designers like Chanel and Vivienne Westwood, have already committed to ending the use of exotic skins in their products. Yet a few holdouts continue to sell these cruel items.

Louis Vuitton is one of the worst offenders, clinging to the cruelty of the past by continuing to use crocodile skins to make wallets, shoes, and handbags. In Vietnam alone, more than 30,000 crocodiles are killed each year just so out-of-touch clothing brands can turn their skins into accessories.

It’s time for Louis Vuitton to get with the times and end its outdated, archaic dependence on exotic animal skins to meet the demands of today’s compassionate consumers.
