New York is just one step away from making historic progress to protect animal from the unnecessary pain and suffering of animal cosmetics testing. Assembly Bill A5653B, also known as the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act, will prohibit the sale of cosmetics in the state of New York that have been newly tested on animals starting on January 1st of 2023. The bill represents the will of the people of New York, as polling indicates that the vast majority of New Yorkers would prefer to buy cosmetics that are not tested on animals. The bill has passed in both the New York State Assembly and the New York Senate and is now waiting for the Governor’s signature to become law. Governor Hochul has an obligation to sign this bill to show that she is dedicated to respecting the wishes of her constituents and that she does not support needless cruelty.

If New York passes a ban on animal testing of new cosmetics it could have a major positive impact for the national conversation around this important issue. New York would become the 9th state to restrict the sale of cosmetics tested on animals and would send a strong message to representatives at the federal level who are trying to chip away at state’s rights to restrict the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. You can read more about this underhanded overreach here.

Every year hundreds of thousands of animals, including rabbits, mice and guinea pigs are subjected to torturous procedures to test shampoos, makeup, and other products even though these methods have been proven to be costly, unreliable, and unnecessary. These tests are conducted so that cosmetics companies can sell their products in China where outdated regulations still require animal testing. We must make it clear that our representatives work for us, not the Chinese government or corporations who are willing to torture animals just to make a higher profit in an already lucrative industry.

Governor Hochul now has the opportunity to stand up to outside interests, respect the will of the people of New York and save the lives of countless innocent animals. Please join us in asking her to do the right thing and sign the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act as soon as possible.
